“The World Health Organization recommends 60 min of moderate to intense physical activity a day for children and at least 30 min per day for adults.”
There are several ways one can get these minutes to attain that elusive fitness and a robust mental health. However, in a world which always seems to have a million options, which should be the ideal way? More importantly, WHY? The answer, I believe lies in the wonderful world of sport. Let me elaborate on my answer.
1. Sport is Engaging
The biggest reason why most fitness fads don’t work is that people get tired of doing the same thing pretty quick. On the other hand, sport is intrinsically engaging – The more you play, the better you become, which unlocks further possibilities. Further, you have a great time constantly challenging your limits while realizing that the pathway to fitness can be simple, interesting and exciting!
2. Sport is Social
If I look back at my childhood, the best friendships have been forged on the field. Playing teaches you compassion – it taught me to invite every friend I know. Also, sport removes barriers – it taught me that where my friends come from does not matter. Finally, it creates bonds. I learnt that although, winning and losing is part of the game, winning and losing together, with family or friends, is what life is all about.
3. Sport helps you create beautiful memories
Remember?
The goal you scored, the ball leaving your foot to nestle into the back of the net?
That six you hit, right from the middle of the bat?
The smash you returned that help your team win?
Chances are that you will remember these for life. Also, as you relive these memories, your time on the field keeps you happy forever.
4. Sport improves your cardiovascular capacity
As you grow older, the most important fitness parameter that you need to keep an eye on is your cardiovascular endurance-simply put, your stamina. Active participation in sports helps improve your stamina levels, thereby drastically reducing your risk of contracting lifestyle diseases including cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes.
5. Sport is nature’s best stressbuster
Further, sport also improves the one aspect of life you are able to least attend to – alleviating stress. Endorphins are the body’s natural opiates, designed to relieve stress and enhance pleasure. They are referred to as the brain’s “feel good” chemicals. Now guess which chemical is released while playing sport?
6. Sport helps you look good
Looking good is not necessarily having bulging biceps, a ripped six-pack figure or muscular thighs. If that is indeed what you chase, then this is not the place to go. You need to spend a lot of time as well as go through a lot of pain to achieve those. But if it is the lean, mean and sporty look that you want – there is no better way to achieve it than playing regularly.
Who would not want to look like a Virat Kohli or a PV Sindhu?
7. Sport helps you feel good
Sport gives you your daily dose of exercise. Playing more and more makes you stronger and fitter which in turn infuses confidence into your everyday life. It enhances your performances in all walks of life.
As you know, there is no better feeling than the winning one – both in sport and in life!
Thus, here are 7 reasons which prove sport is the way to go if you want to stay fit.
